Why Me?

Mark Kramer will again be back to CUC this Sunday and he will be teaching a lesson on Job titled “Why Me?”. The verses he will reference are JOB 2:10, 2:13, 36:15, 38:2 and 42:3. Some information about Mark: He and his wife Ellen have been married 45 years. (He says: We got married when we were 12😊we have 3 daughters, 3 sons-in-law whom we actually like and 5 grandchildren whom we love! ). He is a Stephen Minister, an active member of the Bereans Sunday school class, and he loves to teach!

Note from the Tech Team to Zoomers:

During last Sunday’s CUC class, the Zoom signal dropped three times. We believe that was due to limitations of the RUMC wi-fi network we were using. Please bear with us as we pursue a more stable connection.

Jason Scott writes: I pray you all had a great Sunday this past week. I apologize for the Wi-Fi inconvenience Sunday morning. We didn’t know there was an issue until it was too late to do anything about it. For those who found a way around the issue, KUDOS to you for your ingenuity.

Dear CUC Class, Within hours of cardiac tests at Emory following a routine physical by my G.P., Craig was asking for CUC prayers for me and for the by-pass surgery that was about to take place.  That was 4 weeks ago today, March 22.  Thank you for asking for healing, protection, and skilled doctors.  He answered our prayers.  I was released on Good Friday and well enough to be in church on Easter morning to hear the choir sing their hearts!  We thank each of you for the abundance of cards, notes, messages, phone calls, prayers and well wishes.  We are feeling very loved and blessed.  RUMC again serves  our  neighborhood on  Tuesday , April 7.  This  ministry provides  food to 250 families  every  1st Monday  of the month (This  month it is  on Tuesday) Volunteers  are  needed Our next MUST Mobile Pantry on Mimosa is Tuesday, April 2nd.Here’s how you can help…

Volunteer! We have several volunteer shifts throughout the day.

Donate! We need 200+ jugs of laundry detergent (larger size) and 200+ packages of feminine hygiene products (pads more popular than tampons) each month. If you would like to donate these items, drop them off at the RUMC Fellowship Hall on Pantry Day any time before 4:00 PM.

Additionally, we also need volunteers to shop for us. If you are willing to shop for us in bulk, we will reimburse you!  We also need $$! We use monetary donations to buy laundry detergent, tortillas, protein, feminine hygiene products and more each month. To donate online, go to www.rumc.com and choose About/Giving/Give Online. After you click on “Give Online,” there’s a drop-down menu that says: “Tithes and Offerings.” Pull-down that menu to “MUST Neighborhood Pantry” and donate there. You can also drop-off monetary donations in the RUMC front office. Just write “MUST Pantry” on the check or envelope to ensure it gets to us.

If service has been restored, you will be reconnected to the class. Other helpful hints: 1. Just before class starts, mute your microphone to prevent noise from your household from reaching the classroom. 2. Log in between 9:25 and 9:40 so that the Tech Team has time to test the set up and load lesson materials. Thanks.

CUC Sunday School Class

Simon, Do you See this Woman?

Our own Garlinn Story will be sharing chapter 2 of Adam Hamilton’s book Luke with us this Sunday. The title of the lesson is “Simon, Do You See This Woman?” The Bible verse for the  lesson  is Luke 7:36-39.

One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. After he entered the Pharisee’s house, he took his place at the table. Meanwhile, a woman from the city, a sinner, discovered that Jesus was dining in the Pharisee’s house. She brought perfumed oil in a vase made of alabaster. Standing behind him and crying, she began to wet his feet with her tears. She wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and poured the oil on them. When the Pharisees who had invited Jesus saw what was happening, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. He would know that she is a sinner.”

Lifting Up the Lowly

Our Lenten study will be Luke by Adam Hamilton. This Sunday our own Tom Knight will be teaching the first chapter entitled “Lifting Up the Lowly”.  Tom always brings  us  a well thought out and  prepared lesson. There are several Bible  verses  associated  with  this  lesson. One of them is Luke 2:6,7: “While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.  She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

 Murphy-Harpst Birthday Party

For several years our CUC Class has hosted a birthday party for residents at Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center in Cedartown, GA.  This year our group will be going on March 16 to this Methodist home for teenagers so abused and neglected that the State of Georgia sends them there for individualized therapy.   Here they find a safe, inviting place to live among peers, go to school, and enjoy recreation.  Five residents have birthdays in March, so each will receive a $25 Walmart gift card.  We expect the number of residents and staff attending to be about 80.  A tour of the campus is available for visitors that day.

This coming Sunday a signup sheet will be passed around in class.  Please consider being part of this mission, especially if you have not been there before. Volunteers are necessary for this effort!  You will be blessed.   For the next two or three Sundays a basket will come around for donations toward party expenses.

Thank you, The CUC Mission Outreach Committee

CUC Supports HomeStretch

Here is a testimonial as reinforcement of the great work going on at HomeStretch thanks to, in a large part, on behalf of our caring and generous CUC class which supports  the HomeStretch program  with  regular  donations:

“My name is Brittany Phillips and me and my three children have lived here at home stretched since July 6th 2023. Before coming to this program I had graduated Mary Hall freedom village in February and was living with my children in an extended stay in the Roswell area on the search for affordable housing. As a single mom with three children you can be extremely hard to find something that is affordable and sustainable for me and my family. After reaching out to home stretch and making the necessary changes in my life and my work schedule to fit the requirements of this program we were in a home by July. Since coming here I can honestly say that the feeling of community that I receive here is overwhelming. Life is always happening on life’s terms and there are things that we cannot control however here at home stretch I have honestly realized that it’s all about the people you’re surrounded by and the resources at your disposal how you deal with those things. I had a frightful situation happened around New years with one of my children and home stretch rallyed around me and the office staff was so supportive to get me through this situation. I have learned so much about managing my financials and taking care of myself while I have been here and I feel closer and closer every day towards my goal of long-term stability and owning a home for myself and my children. Miss Cheryl Carter the director is one of the most hands on people I have ever met. She checks on me and my children constantly. She is always there if we ever have any questions or concerns. I know that a lot of directors say they have an open door policy but this woman absolutely means it when she says it if you need her she’s there and it’s amazing, along with her staff I have never felt more at home or welcome in a place. Mr Chris Ambrose is amazing with our children there’s never been a single time that he has missed a birthday or miss an opportunity to help out in any sort of situation. That’s very important especially for me being a single mom with two out of three of my children being boys because sometimes they just need a heart to heart with another gentleman and he’s always there for those type things as well as many other of their school and educational needs. Home stretch is a great place to build stability for your family and for your future and I feel so grateful and blessed to be able to be a part of this program and I hope to continue learning more and more and one day be able to give back to this wonderful program that gave so much to me and my family I look forward to my next year and a half here and know the sky is the limit.”

Newsletter Delivery Problems

For some unknown reason some CUC members have not been receiving the weekly CUC newsletter which is nearly always sent out sometime Friday morning. If it happens that you do not receive it, check your “Junk” file. If you do not find it there you may email suewaite@bellsouth.net to have it resent it to you. Also Gene Osborn, within a short time after he receives the newsletter, posts it on the CUC website. You can always find previous newsletters there too. (In fact you can actually view newsletters and CUC lessons from several years back thanks to Doug Tatom and the work he did in creating and maintaining our CUC website.)

CUC Fellowship Plans

The Fellowship Committee has been hard at work planning some social events for the class. Our first event will be on Wednesday, February 28th. We are going to meet and play games and then go to Wednesday night supper together, which will be fun. Our room has been reserved from 3 – 5, and we hope you will bring your favorite game to play or just come and play and then we will have supper together.

CUC on March 17th will have Brunch after our church services. The menu and pricing will be coming soon and we will need to make reservations and pay so Jacob knows how many to prepare for, so put the date on your calendar. Reservations will start on February 25-March 10. Watch for menu and pricing.

Then in April, we will pass a signup sheet for small group dinners in May and we also are looking for a large space to have a dinner in late May. The Peach and Pork Chop is no longer in business so we are hoping to find another venue, preferably outdoors. If you have a suggestion, please let one of us know.

Our Wednesday Night Out dinners will begin in June. This is a full social calendar so mark your calendars and plan to join us!

A Note from RUMC Leadership:

Periodically we have visitors on our campus that have come to seek help. They may need food, help with their rent or utilities, or seeking help with a place to stay. These days of rising costs are causing many to seek assistance. As much as you would like to give them funds out of your own pocket, we ask you to please not do so. We are set up with North Fulton Community Charities and MUST Ministries for those in need to come to them and receive assistance. Both of these wonderful organizations can offer them guidance to not only get immediate assistance, but also guidance for stability for the future. Thank you for your help.

Debbie  Goodwin  will  be  our  CUC  teacher  this  Sunday  and  next.  Her subject this Sunday is “When Moses Prayed as an Intercessor” using the  scripture from Exodus 32:9 &11

“I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people . . . But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. “O Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand.”

News from Worship Arts

After an extensive search and a very thorough vetting process, the Worship Arts Director Search Committee has selected Angela Lepkofker to be the new Director of Worship Arts replacing Dr. Michael Cromwell. The committee, our clergy and our Sanctuary Choir felt that the gifts and graces that Angela possesses best fit the needs of the Worship Arts program.  Angela is a former member of the Juilliard Opera Center and excels in concert repertoire. She was Adjunct Professor of Voice at Nyack College in NY and at The King’s College in NY, Professor of Music at Free Will Baptist College in Nashville, and taught English Diction at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes School of Music. Angela has been Director of Music at several churches including Emmanuel Faith Community Church in CA; Grace Church in NJ; Southside Baptist in Nashville, TN; Crestview United Methodist Church in Austin, TX; and New Hope Baptist in Mauldin, SC.  Angela is married to Todd and they have two children, Charlton who is 23 and Ryun who is 15.  Please keep this family in your prayers as Angela “officially” steps into her permanent role.

Wednesday Night Classes kicked off 4 NEW classes this past Wednesday. This time, classes vary in length. Two of them will “close” to new members after week 2. And one of them REQUIRES registration. All classes are 6:30-7:30 unless otherwise specified: Celebration of Discipline- This is a 12-week study on the Spiritual Disciplines and the book by Richard Foster. We will look at a different discipline each week. This class is taught by RUMC clergy and other RUMC teachers and will be in the Trinity Cafe. Epic of Eden: Isaiah– Bruce Purvis will be leading this study on the book of Isaiah and the popular book by Sandra Richter. It will close to new members after week 2.All About Joy: Secrets From Philippians- This study was written by and will be taught by our own, Debbie Goodwin. It will be in room B239. Disciple Bible Study- Fast Track- Old Testament– This 12-week condensed version of the traditional Disciple Bible Study offers a great look at the entire Old Testament in only 12 weeks instead of the usual 26 weeks. It lasts a little longer and requires registration. It will be held in the Dining Room (across from the Fellowship Hall) and will go from 6:30-8pm. Mark Kramer will be leading this class. THE APOSTLES OF JESUS: THEIR LIFE & MISSION

Dean Tucker will be continuing to lead a discussion in our CUC class on the apostles this coming Sunday. His lesson is entitled: “THE APOSTLES OF JESUS: THEIR LIFE & MISSION”. The Bible verse most appropriate for this lesson series is found in Mark 3:13-15 “Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve – designating them apostles – that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and have authority to drive out demons.”

Upcoming RUMC Activities

We kick off 4 new classes on this coming Wednesday, January 17:

Wednesday Night Supper Classes/Studies

There are 4 new studies beginning this Wednesday January 17. There is something for everyone. Whether you are a seasoned bible study veteran or just getting started, this semester, we have great classes to strengthen your spiritual muscles and help you grow closer in relationship to Jesus and others.

1) Celebration of Discipline- We have a 12-week study on Richard Foster’s book, “Celebration of Discipline” beginning January 17. Each week, we will focus on a different spiritual discipline, what it means, and how it helps us grow in our relationship with Christ. These classes are taught by RUMC clergy and some of the best lay teachers at RUMC. Each week is open and anyone can attend any class at any time. No registration required. 6:30-7:30pm in the Trinity Cafe.

2) All About Joy: A Study of Philippians- written and taught by Debbie Goodwin, this 5-week series looks at the book of Philippians and the Joy found within. Each week is open and anyone can attend any class at any time. No registration required. 6:30-7:30p in B252

3) Becoming Disciples through Bible Study– this is a “fast track” 12-week survey study of the Old Testament. This updated and streamlined version of the original Disciple Bible study is great for first time Bible students, long time scholars, and everyone in between – even those who have done the study previously. The 12-week courses lead you through the Old Testament with guided reading, small group discussion, and brief video presentations from Bible scholars. Each section is open to men and women of all ages. This study has a start time of 7pm and runs 90 minutes. Registration is required and it will close after the second class (1/24). 7-8:30pm in the Dining Room.

4) The Epic of Eden: Isaiah- Dr. Sandra Richter takes participants back to the eighth century BCE. This ten-week study explains Israel’s religion and economy, explores the definition and role of the prophets, and helps us to apply the message of this great champion of the faith to our lives today. Registration is not required but consistent attendance is expected. This class will close after the second class (1/24). 6:30-7:30pm in B246/248
